At least two of the rear compartments of the Kanchanjunga Express, which was headed for Sealdah, collapsed on June 17 after it was struck by a goods train close to New Jalpaiguri station in West Bengal. Numerous people were reported dead and injured. Around 8:45 a.m. today, an incident occurred in the Katihar Railway Division’s Rangapani sector, in front of the New Jalpaiguri Junction. “Shocked to learn, just now, about a tragic train accident, in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district,” Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote in a post on X. A cargo train is said to have struck the Kanchenjunga Express; further information is pending.
